Through rituals such as the funeral, the body of the deceased is considered to have departed from this world. After that, it is usual that the deceased lives on only in the thoughts and memories of the living, in an eternal and unchanging form. By contrast, in the natural world, the bodies of deceased organisms go through multiple steps to decompose completely and return to the earth. Plant director Mikiko Kamada, a plant researcher, calls this process of death and decomposition "backward change".
The work "TIMELESS⇄／flower compost", which makes visible the steps by which flowers get broken down by microorganisms, is an attempt to imprint on the viewer that both people and microorganisms are important constituents of the Earth, and that both belong to the cycle of the natural world. By burying in the compost along with the rotting flowers materials that, for example, we perceive to be someone's memories or parts of a human body, the viewer can experience how parts of the deceased break down over time and how the bottle continuously changes in appearance. So too, our living bodies are in constant change.
This work is designed so that the viewer, who is a living organism in perpetual forward-moving change, cannot help but become encompassed by it, since "time with the deceased" is updated by the viewer being recorded alongside the work in that moment. How much time will it take for us to come to terms with the phenomenon that is death.

死を迎えた人間の身体は、葬儀などを通して、この世界から消失したものとみなされます。その後、死者は「永久に変化しないもの」として、人々の記憶や想いのなかにのみ存在していくのが常です。一方、自然界においては、生物の身体は死後、幾重ものステップを経て完全に分解され、土に還っていきます。植物研究者でありプランツディレクターのMikiko Kamadaは、その死と分解のプロセスを「後ろ向きの変化」と呼んでいます。
花が微生物によって分解されていくステップを可視化する作品『TIMELESS⇄／flower compost』は、微生物も人間と同じように地球の重要な構成要素であり、自然界の循環の輪のなかにいることを鑑賞者に強くインストールする試みです。その朽ちていく花とともに、たとえば誰かの思い出や身体の一部と感じられるような物質をこのコンポスト（堆肥）内に葬ることで、死者の一部が時間の経過とともに分解され、常に瓶内の様子が変化していくことを感じ取ることができるでしょう。一方、わたしたちの身体もまた、絶え間なく変化を続けています。
この作品は【死者との時間は、現在の自分自身の姿とともに記録されることでアップデートされる】との考えから、前向きな変化を続ける生命体である鑑賞者が必ず写り込んでしまうように設計されています。わたしたちが「死」という現象を受け止めるには、どれだけの時間が必要となるのでしょうか。
