Mikiko Kamada is a Tokyo-based artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of botany, the life sciences, and contemporary art. After completing her doctorate at the Graduate School of Horticultural Science, Chiba University, she worked in corporate research and development before drawing on her scientific background to establish herself as a plant director. Her current practice reimagines the relationship between plants and human beings and examines the vital role of soil and vegetation in the city, working towards nature positive through the creation of urban environments that nurture biodiversity.
In 2015 she released Tanicushion®, a cushion that reinterprets the quiet charm of succulents as a means of bringing greenery indoors, together with Iwai-bana, a soft-sculpture response to the language of ceremonial flowers. These early works opened onto an ongoing artistic practice in which scientific inquiry takes the form of spatial, embodied experience.
In 2019, her installation Office Utopia—an office reconfigured as a space by plants, for plants—drew significant attention at the art fair GRADATION Daikanyama. Her first solo exhibition, (in)visible forest (Art for Thought, Ginza, 2020), sought to render perceptible the lives that ordinarily escape human notice. In 2021 she presented the participatory exhibition flower compost at TRUNK(HOTEL), inviting visitors to internalise the rules and rhythms of the Earth's natural cycles, and exhibited TIMELESS⇄flower compost as part of END Exhibition: Death × Technology × Future = ? at ANB Tokyo, Roppongi—a spatial work that visualised the stages of microbial decomposition and was so composed that the viewer, a living body in continuous forward motion, inevitably appeared within it.
At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, Kamada contributed Metamorphose to the signature pavilion LIVE EARTH JOURNEY ("Totality of Life," produced by Shoji Kawamori)—a work giving form to the interconnections among all living things on Earth and the unceasing processes of material circulation, warmly received by a wide audience.
Working between the laboratory and the gallery, Kamada continues to ask what it means to live alongside other forms of life in the contemporary city, opening quiet spaces in which science, technology, and human sensibility might encounter one another anew.

千葉大学大学院園芸学研究科博士課程修了。生命科学系のバックグラウンドからメーカー開発職を経て、アカデミックな側面を生かしプランツディレクターとしての活動を開始。2015年に室内緑化ツールとして、多肉植物の魅力を再現したクッション【Tanicushion®】とクッションで祝い花を表現した【Iwai-bana】を発表。現在は「植物とヒトの関係性」の再構築、都市における土と植物の重要性を研究しながら、ネイチャーポジティブの実現に向け、生物多様性を育む都市環境の構築を目指し活動しています。
同時に検証の一環でもある表現活動を継続的に行っている。2019年に開催されたアートフェア「GRADATION 代官山」ではオフィスを植物による植物のための空間とした展示”officce utopia”が大きな話題となった。2020年には初個展”(in)visible forest”を銀座のギャラリーArt for Thoughtにて開催。目に見えない生命たちを可視化する試みを実現した。
2021年にはTRUNK( HOTEL)で、参加者に地球の循環のルールや循環に対する意識をインストールするための、参加型展示「flower compost展」を開催。また、六本木ANB Tokyoにて開催された「END展 死×テクノロジー×未来=？」にてTIMELESS⇄flower compostを展示。この作品は花が微生物によって分解されていく循環のステップを可視化する作品とともに、前向きな変化を続ける生命体である鑑賞者が必ず写り込んでしまうように設計された空間作品である。
2025年に開催された大阪・関西万博ではシグネチャーパビリオン「いのちめぐる冒険」では地球上の生命（いのち）同士のつながりや物質循環のプロセスを表現した“無限メタモルフォーゼ”を展示し、多くの来場者から好評を得た。

In 2015 she released Tanicushion®, a cushion that reinterprets the quiet charm of succulents as a way of bringing greenery indoors. Her current practice reimagines the relationship between plants and human beings and examines the vital role of soil and vegetation in the city, working towards nature positive through the creation of urban environments that nurture biodiversity. In parallel, she continues an ongoing artistic practice—creating installations and works that give form to the presence of plants and microorganisms, in which scientific inquiry and creative expression are seamlessly interwoven. Recent projects include Metamorphose, presented at the signature pavilion LIVE EARTH JOURNEY at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
