Some 3 billion years ago, cyanobacteria began capturing sunlight and splitting water molecules to release oxygen into a nascent world. Their silent work sparked the Great Oxidation Event, forever weaving oxygen into Earth's atmosphere and laying the foundation for complex life as we know it.
These ancient pioneers eventually merged with early eukaryotic cells, gifting them chloroplasts and the transformative power of photosynthesis. Through this primordial partnership, they shaped the genetic architecture of every leaf, fern, and forest, creating the green world that sustains us today.
Now, amid accelerating climate shifts and diminishing biodiversity, I turn to cyanobacteria as both scientific inspiration and creative possibility. Imagine their light-harvesting cells living symbiotically within us—our biology intertwined with theirs—transforming each breath into a cycle of carbon fixation and cellular renewal, a step toward a truly self-sustaining life.
When we breathe mindfully, we enter a space of deeper presence. Each conscious inhalation becomes a quiet ritual, echoing the ancient electron transport chains that power photosynthesis. The oxygen you draw in this gallery may trace back to Precambrian stromatolites, contemporary forests, or the living Anabaena and Spirulina cultures growing before you. Every breath renews an invisible covenant with the sun and Earth's earliest atmospheric architects.
In this contemplative space, your respiration becomes a living meditation on symbiosis. The cyanobacteria here are not museum relics but active partners, inviting you to reimagine the boundaries between human and microbial life. Pause, breathe deeply, and allow this moment to illuminate a new connection to the living systems of which we are a part.

約30億年前に地球上に出現し、地球上で初めて酸素を発生する光合成を始めた原核生物であるシアノバクテリア。光合成の開始は、地球を酸素で満たし、地球環境を大きく変えるきっかけとなりました。
また、シアノバクテリアは進化の過程で真核細胞に取り込まれ、その体内に共生することで葉緑体となり、光合成能力を備えた植物の祖先が誕生したとされる、偉大な存在でもあります。
気候変動、海洋汚染、生物多様性の損失など地球環境の破壊が懸念される現代において、未来の動物や人間のあり方（進化の方向性）として、植物に倣って自らに必要な分の酸素／エネルギーは自分で生産するという究極の自活能力を獲得するために、呼吸というritual（儀式）をもってシアノバクテリアを体内に共生させることを試みたいと考えます。
呼吸は、生理的な行為を超えた、自らの内面へとつながる入口であり、意識的に呼吸に耳を傾けるとき、私たちは思考を手放し「今」という瞬間に立ち返ります。この呼吸は儀式（ritual）となります。
展示室を満たす空気には太陽との契約の記憶が宿っています。あなたが今、ここで吸い込むその酸素は、太古の昔に光合成をはじめたシアノバクテリアが生み出したものかもしれないし、シアノバクテリアを祖先とする植物が生み出したものかもしれません。または目の前にある瓶の中のシアノバクテリアが、光を受けて生み出したものかもしれません。絶えず繰り返される呼吸のひとつひとつが、彼らとの見えない契約を静かに結びなおす行為でもあり、「呼吸」、それ自体が共生の体験となり得ます。
静かなこの展示空間で、あなたの呼吸が「儀式」に変わる瞬間を感じてください。
シアノバクテリアとの共生は、過去の出来事ではなく、今この瞬間にも生まれうるのです。
