According to the biophillia hypothesis, humans are equipped with the temperament to love nature.

[While humans are often thought to be different from other creatures], having some special existence on this Earth, we humans are in fact animals in [physical form]. We share the same system with other life forms on the planet. According to modern science, for humans alone to ignore that providence and live with abandonment of the body is not possible.

Nevertheless, the conventional office is the place furthest removed from nature and from the workings of life. Expressing emotions, too, is considered a bad thing in the office. Is spending the majority of the day—the majority of life—in this sort of gray and inorganic space, shuttering off emotion, enriching to an animal's life? This is a thing that I think about.

This space was originally a conventional office. It had desks arranged in islands, with the space ringed by lockers. Office carpeting covered the floor. It was a gloomy space with no windows; only fluorescent lights shone brightly. In this space, nature has now been installed to turn a gray office into a place where the mysteries of life are felt, and where the distance between humans and plants is shortened.

The oddly shaped plant that shines overhead is mistletoe, a semi-parasitic plant. Mistletoe grows by putting forth roots into tree branches to take in nutrients while performing photosynthesis on its own. The plant bears a large number of sweetish fruits, the seeds of which are covered with a sticky substance. When excreting droppings, birds rub their hindquarters against tree branches to dislodge the excreted seeds. This is the mistletoe's strategy. The seeds that were rubbed against tree branches then begin their semi-parasitic life.

The two blue lights that peer out from the locker are blue-sky lighting, created by astronomers to reproduce the blue sky. Studies have shown that exposure to sunlight has positive effects on mental health. Studies have also shown that people who work in sunny offices experience greater happiness and less stress.

The plants in the pots take advantage of cultivation technology that finds actually use in biotechnology. Plant cuttings placed in agarose gel may be an effective means of casual coexistence with plants in offices. However, mold and fungi (known as contamination) will develop in about half of the pots during the exhibition period, and the plants within are fated to eventually rot due to attack by mold. A variety of creatures coexist on the Earth. Battles of living or dying, prospering or perishing, play out day by day. This experiment is an attempt to bring a view of life and death into the office, a place far removed from life. When the lid is opened to take a look, half or even all of the plants may have died.

Taking that opportunity, the original office furniture was given an active role, and a space by plants, and for plants, was created. The result is a place that is comfortable for humans as well. This is because plants and humans are equally living things, using the same system.

Biophillia仮説によると、ヒトには自然を愛する性質が『本能』としてそなえられています。

「人間は他の生物とは違う」、何か特別な存在として地球上に存在していると思いがちですが、私たち人間は「身体」をもった動物です。そして、地球上に存在する他の生物たちと同じシステムを共有しているのです。人間だけがその摂理を無視して生きること・身体を捨てて生きることは、現代の科学ではできないことになっています。

それなのに、従来のオフィスは自然や生命の営みとは最も遠い場所として存在しています。オフィスでは、感情を表に出すこともよくないこととされています。グレーな無機質な空間、そんな空間で、エモーションをしまい込み、一日の大半、一生の大半を過ごすことは果たして動物の一生としては豊かなことなのだろうか。そんなことを考えています。

この空間は、もともと従来型のオフィスでした。島型にデスクが並び、空間をロッカーが取り囲み。地面はオフィスカーペット。窓はなく、蛍光灯だけが煌々と輝いた、どんよりとした空間。ここに、自然をインストールしました。グレーなオフィスが生命の神秘を感じられる場所になるように。そしてヒトと植物との距離が近くなるように。

頭上に光る不思議な形の植物は、半寄生植物のヤドリギ。木の枝に根を張って養分をいただくとともに、自分でも光合成を行って育つヤドリギは、ほんのり甘い実をたくさんつけますが、ヤドリギの種は粘着性の物質で覆われており、糞とともに種が排泄される際、鳥は木の枝にお尻をこすりつけて種を取ろうとするのですが、これこそがヤドリギの戦略。樹木の枝にこすりつけられたヤドリギの種は、半寄生の生活を始めるようになるのです。

ロッカーからのぞく2つの青いライトは、青空を忠実に再現した青空照明。天文学者が、青空を再現したくて作った照明ですが、太陽の光を浴びることはメンタルヘルスに良い影響を与えることが研究で検証されています。また、太陽光の入るオフィスで働いている人は、幸福度が上がり、ストレスが減少したという研究結果もあります。

瓶に入った植物たちは、実際にバイオテクノロジーの現場で使われている植物培養技術を利用しています。アガロースゲルに挿し木された植物たちは、オフィスの中で、気軽に植物たちと共生できる手段として有効かもしれません。ただ、半分の瓶たちは、会期中にカビや菌類が発生し（これをコンタミネーションと呼びます）、最終的には瓶の中の植物はカビ類に侵され腐っていく運命にあります。この地球上では様々な生物が共生し、日常的に生きる／死ぬ、繁栄する／滅びるという戦いが繰り広げられています。生命から遠く離れた場所であるオフィスに、死生観を持ち込みたくて試みた実験です。蓋を開けて見ると、半分どころか全部の植物が死んでしまうかもしれません。

せっかくなのでもともとあったオフィス家具たちにも活躍してもらい、植物たちによる植物のための空間を作りました。そうすると、結果として人間にとっても心地の良い場所になります。植物も人間も同じシステムを利用した同じ生物なのだから。
